Nursing Assistant

Nursing assistants give personal care to patients under the direct supervision of nurses and physicians. They help patients with personal care such as bathing, oral care, backrubs, dressing, feeding, grooming, hair care, toileting; personal hygiene; positioning; transferring; walking; bedmaking; taking temperature, pulse, and respiration; and documentation of the care given. They may also help set up and monitor equipment, clean and sterilize equipment and supplies, and help keep the patient's room orderly. Nursing assistant training is a 75-90 hour course (about 4 weeks). Upon completion of the course, students are eligible to take the Minnesota State Competency Examination. Successful completion of this test allows students to be certified and placed on the Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide Registry for the State of Minnesota. Nursing assistants are employed by long term-care facilities, semi-independent living facilities, hospitals, group homes, home care agencies. In Minnesota, the median wage is $24,000 annually.
