Licensed Practical Nurse (L.P.N.)
Licensed Practical Nurses (L.P.N.s) care for sick, injured, convalescing, and disabled people working under the direction of a physician and/or registered nurse. LPNs provide bedside care to patients by bathing, dressing, providing oral care, feeding, assisting with personal hygiene, keeping the patient comfortable and caring for their emotional needs. They provide patient care requiring technical knowledge such as taking vital signs, preparing and administering medications, recording intake and output, dressing changes, inserting catheters, ostomy care, collecting patient body fluids for testing. In a long term care facility, an experienced LPN may supervise nursing assistants. LPNs work in clinics, doctor's offices, hospitals, long term care facilities, home health care agencies, and rehabilitation facilities. An LPN must complete a 12 - 18 month practical nursing program and pass a licensure exam. LPNs may advance to RNs with additional education. In Minnesota, the median salary is around $35,000 annually.
