Dentist
Dentists (D.D.S. or D.M.S.) diagnose and treat conditions of the teeth and mouth. They exam a patient's teeth and mouth, fill cavities, place protective sealant on children's teeth, remove teeth, make molds and measurements for dentures, and repair fractured teeth. Dentists work with the dental hygienist and dental assistant to promote dental health. They can have a solo or group practice. Dentists must complete a pre-dental or science bachelor's degree, graduate from dental school which is generally a four year program that includes two years of clinical experience treating patients under the supervision of a licensed dentist, and pass the ADA National Board Exam for dentists. Dentists can take additional training to specialize in straightening teeth, treating gum disease, oral and maxillofacial surgery, root canal therapy, pediatric dentistry, designing and fitting of bridgework and dentures, oral pathology, or public health dentistry. The median annual income of a dentist in Minnesota is about $166,400.
