Clinical Laboratory Technologists (Medical Technologists) work under the direction of the Pathologist to perform complex tests on blood, body fluids, tissues and cells. They use a microscope or a complex computerized chemical analyzer to examine a specimen and determine whether the results are normal or represent disease. They make cultures to look for bacteria, parasites, or other microorganisms that could cause infection. They analyze samples for chemical content or reaction, determine blood glucose or cholesterol levels, collect, type and cross-match blood samples for transfusions. Medical technologists interpret the results and relay them to the physician. Technologists may specialize in a particular lab area. They supervise their area or the entire lab plus the laboratory technicians and aides. Med Techs have a bachelor's degree in medical technology or one of the life sciences and have passed a national certification examination.
